Georgia's trip to the Palace near by

Yes, I spent about 4 hours at Gyeongbokgung, the main palace of the Joseon Dynasty (it is only a five minute walk from our hotel). I was there for the fantastic changing of the guards and I was able to try on a guard outfit for free. The photo in the traditional dress cost tho. I even got interviewed by a Korean journalist for Seoul News (we'll see what happens with that).

We are now in Seoul and Dan just finished his 3rd day of teaching about 70 students at Kingdomizers with Moses Lee. Here are some photos, while Dan teaches I go exploring and am having a great time.

Korean lunch at the Beach

Je-Soon and Jee-Hae took us to lunch at a simple beach reastaurant, but it was wonderful, very Korean. The last photo is of Dan teaching in the classrooom and Handong Global University in Pohang, Korea.

Bogyeongsa Temple, Pohang, Korea

Dan took the students to a famous Budhist temple in the mountains. It was right out of National Geographic, begun in 602 AD and still active today. Budhism is a philosophy (not a religion) but much ancestor worship is practiced at such temples. This day they were in the 49th day of 100 days of prayer for a man who died.

1st Anniversary in Pohang, Korea

We had a good trip here, stayed in the Seoul Castle Hotel first night then a road trip across and down S. Korea to Pohang where the Handong University is located. This is a beautiful country. We noticed construction everywhere, 14 to 20 cranes working at sites building large highrise appartment complexes. Of course the food is very different, too.

Going to Korea

So on the 16th we fly JAL to Tokyo then on to Seoul, Korea for almost 4 weeks. Dan will be teaching in 3 different universities. Yes, we have a baby lizard in our back yard! And here is what the morning looks like in the front yard.

Stan and Dan Shaw

We drove to Hemet and spent some time with Dan's dad and his wife, Toni, on Sunday. Had a great Chinese dinner. The weather was over 100 so we didn't stay long as their AC was on the blink (but scheduled to be repaired the next day).

PowWow in Pasadena

This weekend is the First Nations PowWow here at Wm Carey University. We met friends and even got to dance in the welcome, opening circle dance again this year. Cheryl Bear was the woman opener (she has a new CD out (www.cherylbear.com) titled The Good Road. Here are a few photos, including the Grand Opening with Saginaw Grant bringing in the buffalo staff (he stared with Anthony Hopkins in World's fastest Indian-great movie about the Indian motorcycle). Brian Bright Cloud was the announcer and has a great "Indian" sense of humor. We met people from Vancouver, BC area and that was wonderful to fellowship with Native believers.

I was working with photo shop and put these two photos together of Bernie playing his drum in Tulalip and of me holding the salmon drum he gave us last month and the "talking stick" he made for me 25 years ago.

Dodger game 8 2 07

Yes, we did go to the game and wanted to see Barry Bonds tie the homerun record,but "not in our house" was the Dodger fan's response! Julia went with us along with Ken Gates from Seattle. Ken is assisting Dan in the 2-week Research Design course this month.
Plus our week-end pastor at Lake Avenue, Denny Bellesi threw out the first pitch to our new pastor Greg Waybrignt--great team!

Canadian Pensioner

Well, it is true, I am now an official pensioner. Here is my first pension check from the Government of Canada -- $70.12 for 12 years of paying Canadian taxes.

Olson family from India

It was wonderful to have Kathy, Nate, Angali and Serena Olson stay with us last week. I've known Kathy since she was 3 years old and it was so delightful to see the wonderful godly woman she has become.
Here are a few candid shots: Kathy prepared a wonderful meal with Serena's help chopping stuff! We invited Rachel, David, Ashley and Colleen Thaxton to join us and we all ended up soaking our feet in the spa! Dan fixed a great breakfast on their last morning with us. The day before Kathy and Serena went to Disneyland and brought me this queen's crown, and of course Hollie looked too adorable in it to ignore.

MAF members meet at our home

Several MAF board members were in town this week for a meeting, so Larrie Gardner stayed with us, and the guys came for dinner and a planning session on Tuesday. Dennis Dahl, Larrie (Laura Mae), Jerry Van Schaick, plus Dan in discussion on the back veranda.

Friends on the trip north

We were able to connect with many long-time friends on the trip: Jed Brewster with son Asher, Art Glasser, Bill and Sandy Lottis with NAIM, Mike and Donna Olsson with World Vision (formerly Wycliffe in PNG) and Nate and Kathy Olson with Pioneers in India (Lottis' youngest daughter).

Trip up Pacific Coast to Kuper Island, BC

Our trip north was filled with wonderful suprises, visits with old friends and meeting new friends. The photos show my goddaughter Angela and her little one Madison, friends on Kuper Island (Coast Salish 1st Nation peoples), and Dan in the 11-man race canoe.

We stayed with the Gobin family in Tulalip, WA and Bernie sang his song for us and played his drum, then took us to his son's (Joe) shop where they carve the huge totems--it was awesome.

Rose Wedding 6/23/07

Yes, Jeremy and Vanessa were married last night and it was a fun/wonderful service. His brother Josh did the service. Here we are with the couple at the reception dinner.

First Nations Church in Sante Fe, Ca

On Saturday we drove to Hemet, CA (about 2 hours south) to spend some of Father's Day weekend with Stan Shaw, Dan's 90 year young Dad. We had a great time.
Georgia visited the FNC on Sunday evening with two of the guys from the Tennessee cohort. Last summer we met Cheryl Bear (Carrier Indian from BC) and have been going to visit their church for almost a year now. Finally made it!
Cheryl and her husband Randy pastor the church and it was wonderful to see how they have contextualized the "Indian" way into their gathering.

Tennessee Cohort came to dinner!

Yes, the guys came and it was a great time. Dan was teaching that group last year in Tennessee when I fell and damaged my cheek bones. It was great to meet the guys who prayed Dan through that difficult time of not knowing what was happening to me.
Isn't the Lord good! As you can see we had a great time.

Graduation weekend is over!

Well, five parties later graduation is over and we are moving on to the next big event: the Tennessee Cohort arrived this week and are coming for dinner tonight.
Here is a group of photos from the graduation. There were 35 doctoral students graduated from SIS (School of Intercultural Studies) and Georgia edited the dissertation for 11 of them.

2007 Fuller Graduates

Yesterday was the "hooding" for doctoral students at Fuller and the School of Intercultural Studies (SIS) hooded 35 students. This photo is Dan with 3 of his students covering the globe from the Philippines, to Thailand to Brazil/Japan. It was so exciting to be there and watch each one kneel, receive their hood and be prayed for by their personal mentor.
