Yes, David was with us for a couple of hours to catch up on intervening years and share a meal together. This was David's first time to meet Dan and be in our home so it was fun showing him around, plus he fixed some computer problems I was having, thanks Dave.

We had a wonderful time with several Fuller students from various countries; Uganda, Germany, Cameroon and missionary to the Philippines. While we were in Cameroon in 2007 we met Barbara and Blaise Beboua's parents (he in long white embroidered shirt, she in the middle of three ladies on the couch in brown gown) and they arrived in the United States for the first time last week. What a joy to have them in our home along with their family that they have not see for 6 years. Also Blaize's aunt (on couch in purple gown) who is here caring for their 3 children while Barbara and Balise study. David and Anna Ofumbi and little girl were with us, Nicole from Cameroon (in yellow and white gown), Birgit Herppich from Germany (holding child in 4 photos), and Jacquiline Huggins (Wycliffe in the Philippines) in red sweater.

In the one photo you see the children and Blaise checking out the reindeer Georgia is making from fallen palm fronds. The kids thought they looked more like elephants!
It was such a lovely afternoon we prayed in the back yard and then ate in the dining room inside.

Yes, we visited two more missions on our trip to San Diego for our 3rd anniversary outing. At San Luis Rey there are 144 window panes in the dome, fantastic. The river pattern in the heavy wooden doors is typical of the missions. We were most taken with the ruins of the San Juan Capistrano mission that is being rebuilt.

MAF gets first Kodiak

Georgia finally got a close up and personal view of MAF's new Kodiak aircraft at the El Monte Airport near Pasadena. The Kodiak 100 was designed and manufactured by Quest Aircraft and runs on jet fuel, allowing MAF to reduce its dependency on avgas while ministering in remote, isolated areas. This first MAF KODIAK will be used in Papua, Indonesia. Dan is pictured here with John Boyd, MAF USA director. Georgia got right in and took photos of the inside, fantastic, just fantastic and so clean, too!

Yes, graduation time again, but this one was more special than usual, as the first "cohort" from SIS graduated 5 Dr. of Missiology students. And such a celebration we had, 30 folks here at our home for a time of eating and sharing. This first cohort was from Toronto, Canada and Dan was their mentor. So pictured here are Dan and Doug McConnell signing the dissertation sheets, Betsy Glanville and Dan signing Vaden Williams' cover sheet, Dan with all the grads; Ruth Cassidy, Harold Minor, Chad and Leslie Segraves, Christine Vaughan, Malcolm Hartnell, Joseph Wamutitu, Wondferahu Ersulo and Assefa Zelelew. Yes, it was Georgia's birthday so we got out of the fog blanketed city and drove up to Mt. Wilson for a picnic. It was wonderful and we got to see a large piece of history, especially the 100 inch telescope. It gave us incentive to drive down to Palomar to see the 200 inch telescope next.

We had a wonderful evening with some 30 of the SIS doctoral students. A new cohort began this week with Wilbert Shenk here in the Pasadena, so they were included as well. It was a wonderful time of eating and fellowship. It got cool after sunset and our African brothers were cold, thus the butterfly blanket for Omanni.

The end of April saw Dan in Cairo with Dudley and several students. Here (1) is the group, (2) a view of Cairo with pyramids visible in the center background, (3) Nile River with bullrushes similar to where Moses was placed in a basket, (4) Dan on the base of one of the pyramids (5) Magdy as modern day Moses, (6) Magdy is from Cairo so took Dan on a wonderful tour of 'his' home area (7) and the last one is of a local Bedouin with his camel talking to Dan.

MAF and the Kodiak 100

Dan was just in Napa, Idaho for the MAF board meetings and the first Kodiak 100 flew in on its way to Indonesia. Here is an up-to-date piece from MAF:

Our first Kodiak 100 has arrived! The new aircraft, designed specifically for mission
aviation, was welcomed last week by our American staff and trustees as it taxied into
our hangar in Nampa, Idaho, USA.
The delivery of the keys last Monday week took place at the Quest factory. All 200+
employees gathered around the aircraft and laid hands on it, sending it off with their prayers and blessing. ‘We are very excited to see this tangible result of the Kodiak project,’ reports Dave Rask, our Director of Aviation Resources in the USA. ‘The HF radio and other minor modifications will be installed in April and,following the May dedication, it will make some west coast visits to thank donors for their involvement. We expect to ferry to Indonesia in June or July.’ Dave continues, ‘MAF’s second Kodiak is already well along in the assembly process and is scheduled for delivery in July.’

Yes, Joan Henry and Jim Farr were married last month in Papua New Guinea and are in the States for a few weeks so they are staying with us for a few days. It is great getting reacquained with Joan and Jim as a couple. We both knew Joan as a student at Fuller in the early 90s and Dan knew Jim from PNG, so it is great fun.

Huntington Gardens with Anjali and Cam

Anj (Kathryn Lottis' and Nate Olson's first born) and Cam (from Prince George, BC) had a few days off Azusa Pacific University so they spent time with me and we went to the Huntington Gardens for Lincoln's 200th birthday celebration. It was a nice day wedged in between rain and cold. Here you see the entrance of the Gardens, the first portrait of Lincoln, then a shot of the bronze cast of Lincoln's head and hands (fantastic). Huntington is known for its art gallery, statutes and gardens. I really enjoy all the chandaliers, too. Note the magnolia tree in bloom with the orange trees in the background. There is actually an orange grove on the grounds!

Saturday, Jan. 17th was a glorious day here, so we took a short drive up to the Angeles National Forest. We got out at a 'look out' and spent some time praying for various needs as we extended our hands out over Los Angeles basin and toward Santa Catalina Island. I was reminded of that verse that says, "IF MY PEOPLE, WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME WILL HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND PRAY..." Lord, may your will be done here on earth as it is being done in heaven.

Just received an email from Willie with the wonderful news that after one month of the prescription from Mayo Clinic in Arizona he is able to stand, take a few steps and swing his arms more than previously. Praise the Lord, here is some from his email:

I am beginning to understand the medical/spiritual phenomenon! God’s purpose for me is unfolding….

The time off has been a great blessing. I am amazed at the ways God is using this time off to provide healing, affirmation, and equipping me for another phase of ministry.

It is also refreshing for me to continue mentoring key leaders by emails and telephone. I have designed two web sites, drafted seven textbooks and leadership training manuals as well as videos. It’s all about helping leaders discover and utilize their God-given talents to make a difference in organizations, nations, and communities in Africa.

I have had an opportunity to observe colleagues and students provide excellent leadership and training during my time off. My staff is ably maintaining the buildings and grounds of the Leadership Center in Kumasi. I have such a gifted group of ministry colleagues, and I did know!

Thank you for your prayers, encouraging acts and emails. God answered your prayers! God is doing more than I can ask or expect. His mighty hand is on me, giving me joy, hope and peace.

It is a cold rainy christmas morning here in southern California. Dan lit the fire place in the front room and we enjoyed Christmas music, a crackling fire, candles and coffee as we read about Mary's part in the Birth story. Wonderful!

This year I made up the rein deer from fallen palm fronds that litter the streets with the fall storms and Hollie was checking them out. You can see Dan's 5 grandchildren pictured on our tree and we are so thankful for a growning happy healthy family. Then is a photo of Julia and Stephanie opening their gifts before a wonderful dinner at Rick and Suzanne's home.

What a wonderful afternoon with Rick and his family, Ryan and his family, and Rob (who was flying for Southwest Air and had an overnight in Ontario, CA). It was Emma's first Thanksgiving and everyone so enjoyed her. Noah is almost 3 years old and was the life of the gathering. It was nice to have Dan's 3 sons together, again.

Betty Ann Wagner and Wayfarers Ministries

Today we attended a luncheon celebrating the ministry of Rev. Betty Ann Wagner and the support she has been to many, many students at Fuller School of Intercultural Studies. In her years of ministry she has shipped approx. 62 tons of books around the world. Wonderful words of thanks and love were shared by various students and faculty and they all agreed she is an awesome combination of tenderness and toughness. Betty Ann shared that one of her students, Stanley Mutunga from Kenya, wanted to start a ministry for aids orphans and asked Betty where he would get the orphans, she said, "Be obedient to what the Lord is telling you and the orphans will come. Now, 5 years later he has 1,000 orphans."

Yes, last night Ray and Jill Davis shared their work in Eldoret, Kenya with our home group from Lake Ave. Church. The Davis' are training African missionaries to do cross-cultural ministry in various African countries. They shared prayer requests for the nation of Kenya as it continues to struggle after the post-election violence and 200,000 people are still displaced. The lower photo is of Dan with, Jill and Ray, along with Nancy and Dave Rose.

Anjali got a break from her studies at Azusa Pacific Univ. and spent the weekend with us and got to see some of my favorite places like the hall of stainglass windows at the Mountain View Mausoleum (she has a first year photography course so enjoyed taking pics, too). Then she cooked us a scrumptious north Indian meal with real chai, my first taste of chai and it was good! We also had the SIS doctoral students over for a potluck meal and it was encouraging to see how far they have progressed in their PhD program to this point. MAFI and CanIL visit in British Columbia

Dan attended the Missionary Aviation Fellowship, International board meetings in downtown Vancouver and we all went on a dinner cruise of the harbor so you see the famous Lionsgate Bridge between Stanley Park and North Vancouver, and the lighted sphere of the Science center in Flase Creek Bay. The top row of photos are; the newly elected CEO of MAFUS, John Boyd, then Dan and I with long time friend Larri Gardner, then Larri with Janet Busk the CFO for MAFI and a side view of newly elected President and CEO of MAFI, Ron Pritz.

We spent time with retired Wycliffe translator Joy McCarthy in Abbotsford (pictured here with her brother Dave and his wife Flora). The center photo is me with Carrie Lundberg Gamble, whom I've known since before she was born! We also stopped in at Trinity Western to visit CanIL (Canadian Institute of Linquistics) and Dan's long time friend Mike Walrod (they ran around the Philippines as teenagers together). Here is a photo of me with Hyatt Moore's painting of the indigenous last supper. I noticed there weren't any women in the picture so I filled in for the woman who undoubtedly was taking the photo! Owell. The forest shot with rising mist is to give you an idea of winter in the 'great north wet'.

Tulalip Tribe and Sea Bird Island Band visit

Sept 16-21, 2008 we flew to Seattle, rented a car and drove to Dan's MAFI board meetings in Vancouver, BC. The collection of photos are some of the people we visited in Tulalip, Washington and then in BC at the Seabird Island band with Archie Charles and his family.

The summer of 2007 we were at Tulalip and Bernie Gobin took us to his son's shop to show us the totems Joe was working on for the new Tulalip Resort near Marysville, WA on I-5. Seeing the standing totems was awesome and the stories behind Joe's designs are wonderful. So much of the resort's 12 floors have art and designs on display from many of Bernie's family. You can see Patti Gobin and I standing on either side of the art designed from one of the elder's combs. Dan also got to pick some of the wild black berries I'd told him so much about.

Then we went to have Dan meet Archie Charles at Sea Bird Island. Archie was chief there for 28 years (all the time I lived in BC) and retired in 1999. Here he is in traditional dress with cedar bark hat and wool shawl with Mt. Cheam in the background. You can also see Sam George standing by his van showing me where a bear climbed up and over the van that was parked at his home. I hadn't been in Sea Bird for 20 years so the families have grown.

Noah has his baby sister! Here is the announcement from Ryan after he called from Istanbul, Turkey. "Well our big day arrived today. Our beautiful daughter named Emma Karynn Shaw came into the world. She is a perfectly healthy little princess and our pride and joy. She is 7 pounds 5 ounces and 20.5 inches long and was born at 8:28 AM on September 5th." Kelly and Ryan are so happy.

Chi Chang Cheng Jarry Terracotta Warrior

Aug 19th was our second wedding anniversary and we decided to tie in a museum visit with all we have been watching on TV with the Beijing Olympics. The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana presented the largest exhibit of Emperor Qin's Terra Cotta Army ever seen outside of China. It was our once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see one of the 20th century's greatest archaeological finds, often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World.

China's First Emperor, the boy king who united the country in 221 BC and began construction of the first Great wall, was not only obsessed with building but also a fanatic about death. After experimenting with potions to prolong his life, the megalomaniac king resigned himself to death on his own terms. He would build a standing army of 7,000 soldiers to enforce his rule over the afterlife.

This terra cotta army of soldiers, servants, musicians, acrobats, and animals silently remained underground for two thousand years. Until, in 1974, Chinese farmers digging a well made the startling discovery of a terra cotta head.

It was a fantastic museum visit AND meeting Jarry doing "live statue performance art" was wonderful. He stood perfectly still near the entrance to the exhibit but then came walking up to us and extended his hand. We learned that he (ChiChang Cheng) has been doing this for over 10 years in his home of Taiwan.

Athens, Greece

My niece, Julie Poulos Williams (half Greek herself) called to tell me I hadn't posted any photos of our time in Athens from July 18-20 so here are a few. It was a fantastic time for both of us, Dan got to explore places he hadn't had time for before and our hotel, the Amalia, was directly across from the Palace Gardens and very close to the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, Syntegama Square, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Parliament House (the old Palace) where we watched the changing of the guards, Panathenaikon Stadium which was the site of the first modern Olympic games in 1896, and a few blocks from the renowned "Plaka" district located around the base of the Acropolis.

Here are photos of the Acropolis, Parthenon, Agora and such. Dan actually got to stand on Mars Hill and look across to the Acropolis as he prayed for Athens like the Apostle Paul did in the book of Acts.

New testament dedication in Cameroon June '08

I have video footage from the dedication of the Mofou-gudur New Testament celebration Dan and I attended in Yaounde, Cameroon. The video was taken by Tom Woodward on his cell phone so the sound is a bit distorted but I think it gives the sense of joy and pride the people have for the Bible in their own language. The flute players are especially interesting, yes some are made from PVC pipe.

It was after this celebration in conversation with Tom W. that I learned I could take videos with my Canon camerah, dah! If only I had known this sooner this blog would be filled with my videos! Owell, the time is right for it now.

Call to Prayer in Istanbul July 2008

Our summer trip took us to predominately muslim contexts and in Istanbul I recorded the call to prayer on the street near the Blue Mosque. Each time it is different but hearing it added so much to what I had read about the call.

As we flew into London I took these shots of famous places. It was my first time in London so I was thrilled to get the London Eye just across the Thames from Big Ben. Also got the Tower Bridge and Wembley Stadium before landing. And it only seemed fitting to END the trip with the TAILs of some of the planes we've seen in various airports.

Visit Georgia Kanakaris in Levidi, Greece

Our last day in Athens, we took a two hour bus ride to Tripoli and then another 1/2 hour bus ride to Levidi, to visit Georgia's brother-in-law's 81 year old sister Georgia. They hadn't seen each other in 40 years. Geo's son Christoki picked us up at the bus in the village of Levidi and we spent some time in the family home. Then we had a wonderful Greek meal at Chris' restaurant, Melathron in Tripoli. It was fantastic, the restaurant has a large swimming pool, too. That day they were serving a group of 150 for an infant baptism celebration. We met Chris' daughter, Gina (also Georgia) who does clowning to keep the little ones happy. The last photo was taken from the street at Georgia's home looking at the village of Levidi. It was a fantastic way to end our month-long adventure.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is Dan's most favorite place in the Greek Islands. The community is built on the top of the cliff and looks like snow on the mountain. It was created with the volcano blew up and formed the islands. It is famous for the white buildings with blue roofs. We had a wonderful, tho' brief 3 hour time, as we took the gondola up the cliff and then walked down the 568 paved donkey path to the docks. It was crazy because donkeys were coming and going all the time we decended the path, and wow did they smell! You can see the switch-back trail down the cliff in the photos. It only took us 20 minuted to walk down.

Crete and Rhodes, Greece

We stopped at Crete, the Minoan period, from 4000 to 1200 BC it was the center of a flourishing civilization. The eruption of the volcano on Santorini and the tidal wave, which followed, destroyed Crete and gave rise to the legend of the lost city of Atlantis. Crete is the mythological home of Zeus. We didn't take a tour here but did go on the small train around the port city and got an idea of the community.

At the stop in Rhodes we walked around the old walled city constructed by the knights of St. John in the 13th century. And met some local people. The lady in black is blind, but was so pleased when I called her 'yaya' (grandmother). Even tho' they couldn't speak English they were fun to get acquainted with. The shop sells paintings and even put them on display in the ceiling. The symbol of Rhodes is the lone deer guarding the harbor.

Kusadasi (Ephesos), Turkey

At the ruins of Ephesus we saw the Roman bath and the 'toilets', it is amazing they are still in this shape. Center top is the sculpture of Niki the Greek goddess of victory (yes, this is where Niki got their emblem for their shoes). You can also see the buriel tombs stacked on top of one another. We returned to the city of Kusadasi for a little shopping and met this young man using 'worry beads' so Dan got an explanation of what they are used for, basically "just something to do with your hands" is what he said. The Turkish rugs are so beautiful and the mosaic tiles and plates are fantastic. We met this young man who is in business with his parents and sister to make these plates and mosaics tiles. He is showing us 'his' tree of life and is pointing at his future wife in the picture. We are standing in his shop and as you can see it is filled with beautiful things. The plate in the center bottom is a painting of the famous "whirling durvish" and in the skirt is arabic writing.
In the bottom photo are shots Dan took when he walked up and around the huge amphi theatre and even went under it (Elton John held a concert here with 50,000 people). The main marbel paved road leads down to the Library and buriel monument of Celeus. The last photo is of Dan being a living statue inside the back wall of the Library! Patmos, Greece

When the ship docked at Patmus we got a bus up the hillside to the place where it is believed St. John received the Revelation from Christ. A church is built over the cave and there is a series of winding steps down to the entrance. The day we visited priests were preparing communion. as you look up from the site you can see the great fortified monastery from 1088 AD to honor St. John. When you look down from the cave site you can see the port city and the large hill to the left is believed to be where St. John lived. The painting shows Christ giving John the Revelation.

Mykonos, Greece on the Cruise

This is the Island of Mykonos famous for the windmills. We took a boat to a small island of Delos where it is believed Apolo was born along with this twin sister Artemis. They were the children of the greek god Zeus. We took lots of photos but many don't have meaning without a lot of explanation. Delos was a main grain port and slave market. At its height Delos sold 10,000 slaves a day. Delos has the most complete residential quarters surviving from ancient Greece all from BC because it was destroyed and burned by pirated in 69 BC. The bottom photo is the palace of Cleopatra (see the two statues on the left). Nearly all of the statues are headless because site robbers stole them (many are in museums in England).

Grand Bazaar in Istanbul

I have never seen the likes of the Grand Bazaar, it seems to go on forever, really. The light shops were so fascinating to me, very detailes and beautiful. As we were leaving the Bazaar area I met this lady who was knitting scrap cloth into various items like vests and hand bags. One day on an outing I got this shot of Noah by the statue of Ataturk.

We actually traveled regularly on the Orient Express train, the same one that originally ran from Paris to Istanbul and is in so many movies (like James Bond ones). I just thot' that was so cool. The train depot is in the first photo and then Ryan, Kelly and Noah riding on the train.

Topkapi Palace

Ryan took Dan and I to the Topkapi Palace Museum and it was awesome. So much history in this city located on the line between Europe and Asia. It looks out toward the Black Sea and across the extended city of Istanbul. Topkapi was the Ottoman Sultan's second palace in Istanbul built in 1478, with a population of about 4,000 people, it covers 173 acres. It served 25 sultans for nearly 400 years. Here you see Dan and Ryan walking on the very pathway the Sultans walked, and Dan is sitting the the "stone throne" that the Sultan used when watching sports games.

yes, we did spend time at the Blue Mosque (named so because of all the blue mosaic tiles through out the buildings. We did go in the mosque as prayers were being lead, but had to enter thru the non-muslim door. Yes, Dan had to wear a cloth wrap because he had bermudas on. July 7 Last Day in Africa

We left SIL Cameroon about 11 AM by taxi with Juta (one of Dan's doctoral students who serves in Mali). The bus trip to the port city of Douala was fast and furious, as the photos show. It took about 4 hours and some places the driver was going 80-90 mph. This was the best photo I got of the trememdous traffic congestion in Yaounde. You can see cars turning around in the very middle of the pack-both directions! Amazing. Along the route were small communities that we had to slow down and sometimes pay toll so the locals surrounded vehicles and hawked their wares. Many logging trucks and motor cycles. It was an airconditioned bus and we sat in the front seats so got to enjoy everything, even the 3-part African soap opera in some other language! Juta accompanied us to Douala and we had dinner with her before we went on to the airport, all-in-all a fantastic experience.

Trip to the Market in Yaounde

Yes, today I made a trip to the artisan market with Pam Robinson and her helper, Rebecca (first photo with two of the men selling items). Butterflies are very popular art here and you can see some of the pictures they make from butterfly wings. It was a wonderful few hours, altho most of it was spent in taxi stuck in traffic. Pam is here working with Wycliffe Associates helping with the volunteers, the clean water program and developing materials to assist in the aide crisis. I feel like the Lord has given Pam to me especially for this trip and I am committed to pray for her. Because she is an older woman of color the Africans respond very positively to Pam.

Cultural Symposium in Cameroon

This is the group of brothers and sisters attending this symposium from all over Africa. Then you see Dan doing his run each morning around the oval here at the SIL property where we are housed. A friend in Pasadena has family here in Cameroon so they came to visit on Saturday, it was wonderful. Five of the 23 people in the symposium are serious 'birders' so I got a photo of them out birding early each morning. This compound is surrounded by a very tall wall and I can hear what is happening on the other side so today I went exploring on the other side. Kids playing kick ball were surprised when I could kick it back, and the road to the south gives you an idea of 'off-the-road' situations here.

New Testament dedication in Cameroon

We met Judy and Ken Hollingworth (Bible translators from the northern most part of Cameroon) when we first arrived at the SIL property, he welcomed us at 10 PM and got us set up in the guest house. Then the next morning I met Judy as we waited for 10 AM coffee break and she thought my clothes were too hot for Cameroon so lent me two of her cotton dresses to wear while we are here (now everyone thinks I’m Judy when they see me in her dresses!).

The dedication of their New Testament for the Mofou-gudur people was fantastic, several hundred people gathered in a large Presbyterian Church here in Yaound. Special yellow printed cloth material for their matching outfits, men, women and children. Four choirs sang, played local flutes and drums and held their new red translations high as they sang. We had to leave for another meeting after 3 hours and it was still going strong (that’s the African way I’m learning). It was fantastic flying over Europe, the French Alps, the Mediterranean, on into Algeria, then the Sahara Desert-more sand than I could ever have imagined. There was a slight change in flight plans as the Central Africa Summit was happening in Yaounde, Cameroon the day we were scheduled to arrive and they closed the airport for the presidents to fly out. So we flew to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo and then back up to Cameroon. We arrived at 10 PM and were fast asleep in our little cottage by midnight. You can see how Dan spent his time in the Brussels airport! Friday Dan met with the first group to discuss a cohort for the seminary in this area of the world, pictured here are the potential students.

It was a wonderful trip over the Atlantic, horizon never really went dark, crossed the English Channel then on into Brussels. Had a wonderful time with our host John Koeshall and you see Dan at the statue of Nepoleon at Waterloo, then Georgia at the Villers Abbey just outside of Waterloo a bit (see her in one of the top windows of the ruins). Down town Brussells at the Central Plaza was amazing, most beautiful of all Europe's plazas we're told. Seems the mascot of Brussells is the little boy manaquin peeing, so of course we had our photo with the "wee pee" statue!

We took the train down town and I noticed the grafetti, and smart cars, buildings, chocolate stores, here Dan and John are enjoying a belgium waffle treat and lastly one of the many lace shops. Brussells is a wonderful city, "gateway to Europe."

Wedding in Phoenix

May 25, Janne Perona married Adam Gaub in Phoenix, AZ. It was wonderful, all 3 of Dan's sons attended so the whole Shaw family was together, even the Ryan and Kelly's one expected to arrive in September. Two year old Lauren was a precious flower girl, 2.5 year old Noah was a little dynamo, Julia and Stephanie were a delight and the men oh, so handsome! Sunday the 18th we attended a party for Peggy and Sandi (home Bible study members) and it was wonderful. The day was fairly warm but more than 50 people came to celebrate in a backyard bash. Mark played his electric guitar and sang "oldies but goodies" as some did a little dancing. Frank and Allen grilled the meat (very tasty guys) and it was just plain fun. The mango cake was great as were the stuffed dates (thanks Chris). Sad to say this will be the last gathering for Jo and Mike as they are moving to Phoenix in June, bless you as you relocate.

This morning we attended service at Pasadena Covenant Church to hear the Kids musical, directed by Ashley Thaxton. I was on staff at PCC in the 90s and a member of the church. Charlie Barker announced his resignation last week so it was good to be with the group and encourage he and Katie, after 27 years ministry. Yes, we were so proud of Colleen as she sang a solo and held a key role as Mrs. Noah!

We spent a couple of hours at one of Dan' favorite 'retreat' spots in this area. The doctoral students take one Friday a couple of times a year and listen to the Lord. Last summer Dan and I spent 3 weeks in South Korea. During that time we visited the DMZ between N and S Korea. I took a photo of Dan at the Uniting Painting by Raran Lurie and just today learned more about the man and the painting. Here are photos of Dan, what the painting looks like in S. Korea, then one of the United Nations version, Greek, and Jerusalem. Ranan Lurie appears twice in the same 1999 Guinness Book of World Records, representing two very different categories. He holds for 20 consecutive years the title of “The most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world,” as well as being a scion to the oldest recorded living family today: "His family is directly descended from the royal house of the biblical King David and can trace its genealogy back to the 10th century BC." My God-daughter, Ashley Rene Thaxton loves singing and has such a wonderful talent. (Ashley is in the front row 3rd girl from the left, behind the award--the beautiful young 16 year old!)

Students from Pasadena's Soto Voce choir joined sweltering Renaissance Faire crowds Saturday April 12 for a command performance fit for royalty.
The eight sophomores and juniors from the Marshall Fundamental School choir were invited to sing before the faire's queen after winning the faire's first-ever Madrigal competition.
Hundreds of student choirs across Southern California applied, but Soto Voce "had it perfect," said Colleen Russell-Elkins, who doubles as the faire's musical director and public relations director.
"The songs can be complicated because our modern ear is not used to the tonality and the harmonies," she said. "These kids blew me out of the water ... When I listened to their audition, I got chills."
That's no small compliment, coming from Russell-Elkins, who minored in Renaissance music and has studied the romantic Renaissance-era songs known as Madrigals for more than 20 years.
"It's beautiful music. It's almost addictive," she said, noting the songs were sung for fun or entertainment in the courts of wealthy families.
Soto Voce, which first formed this school year, sung an authentic Italian Madrigal called "Fa una canzona," or "Write me song," written by Orazio Vecchi during the Renaissance.
Marshall Fundamental Secondary School won the grand prize during an award ceremony for the first annual Madrigal Competition (a short love poem that is sung) during the Renaissance Pleasure Faire April 12. 2008 in Irwindale.

Donkey Ollie and Monrovia Street Fair

Last night Dan and I took Betty Sue Brewster with us to the Monrovia Street Fair. I had just completed a CD presentation for Destinations ministry and was scheduled to deliver it to Ramses and Mariam Ibrahim at their table on Myrtle Street (here they are working their table).

One of the most fascinating parts of the evening was seeing this baby watch the DVD "Donkey Ollie", the story of the donkey who carried Jesus into Jerusalem in preparation for the Last Supper. The music and animation are wonderful, I recommend it for all kids. www.donkeyollie.com

My sister Charlene and cancer

The first born in our family, Charlene, was diagnosed with hodgkins lymphoma last month and had a blast of chemo that nearly ended her life (according to doctors in Ann Arbor, MI). I stayed in hospital with Char for part of 6 days and got to see God restore her health - just this week her daughter sent me the photo of Char getting ready to go home on the 10th. Yes, we are praising the Lord and trusting Him to bring Char thru the remainder of her chemo regiment.

Ryan Shaw Waking the Giant

March 12 we attended a dinner to honor the 39 years of service to Fuller by Charles Kraft. A book was done and presented as well titled "Paradigm Shifts in Christian Witness". His kids did a power point that contained a black and white photo of SWM professors in the early 80s. They are from left; Pierson, Kraft, Glasser, Wagner, Gilliland, seated are Shaw and Clinton. Darrell Whiteman co-authored the book with Chuck Van Engen and Dudley Woodberry. Dean Gilliland sang and Roberta King played the thumb piano.

Arabic ministry continues

Stan Shaw gets his 'Oscar'

Yes, on the very day of the Academy Awards, Dan's 91 year old dad is finally with the Lord. Stan had a stroke on Feb. 13th and did not regain consciousness. He died at home Sunday morning Feb. 24th. Here is a group of photos of Stan with his wife Toni, his daughter Joan w/ her husband Jess, and Dan and I at various times. We spent Christmas with them in Hemet, CA and as we were leaving Stan held Dan's hand and pronounced a blessing on his only son. We have so much to be thankful for and rejoice in the homegoing of this godly man.

Yesterday I took a tour of the 1908 Gamble House (some 3 miles from our home). It was spectacular, can't wait to take Dan so he can experience the 'woods' used in the home.

The David B. Gamble house, constructed in 1908, is the internationally recognized masterpiece of the turn-of-the-century Arts and Crafts Movement in America. Built for David and Mary Gamble of The Procter and Gamble Company, the house is the most complete and best preserved example of the work of architects Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, who made a profound impact on the development of contemporary American architecture.

Greene and Greene broke sharply from the academic traditions of their time, using nature as a guide rather than the dictates of popular historical styles. The design of The Gamble House, while in part inspired by the wood-building vernacular traditions of such cultures as the Swiss and the Japanese, is a unique statement drawn from the life and character of Southern California. Wide terraces and open sleeping porches facilitate indoor-outdoor living, careful siting and cross-ventilation capture the cool breezes of the nearby Arroyo, and broad, overhanging eaves shelter the house from the hot California sun. Wood is celebrated in the Greenes' use of articulated joinery, exposed structural timbers and shingles which blend sensitively with the landscape.

In The Gamble House, furniture, built-in cabinetry, paneling, wood carvings, rugs, lighting, leaded stained glass, accessories and landscaping are all custom-designed by the architects, in the true hand-crafted spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement. No detail was overlooked - every peg, oak wedge, downspout, air vent, hardware and switchplate is a contributing part of the single design statement and harmonious living environment. The house is a symphony in wood, with interiors carried out in teak, maple, Port Orford cedar, redwood and oak; each piece artfully selected and hand-rubbed to a satin finish. Iridescent glass adorns doors, windows and light fixtures which change color as the day passes and diffuse subtle patterns of light throughout.

Providence Mission Homes celebration

On Feb 5, 2008 we attended the PMH dinner in honor of retiring board members. Jac and Mercedes Gribble started PHM in 1972 to provide housing for missionaries on furlough or needed leave. Dan has been on the board for many years and as he and Karen stayed in PMH when they arrived in Pasadena in the early 80's, he has a warm spot for the ministry they do.

2008 Doo Dah Parade

A mock "Rose Parade" is the annual Doo Dah Parade here in Pasadena (it was usually held on Thanksgiving weekend but changed this year to brighten up the grey days of winter!). Rick and Suzanne went with us this year (a first for them, and Dan or I hadn't been in like 15 years or so). The overriding themes were politics and religion. See the baby in the flag drapped shopping cart, he's running for President "put a baby in the white house". These were just some of my favorites; Howdy Krishna, the Pope, Billie Savitri, the Stogie Men (just smoking big cigars!), Nixon x 2, and the bagette drill team. The men in black wer just marching to music!

Teaching LAMP in central Los Angeles

This week I met with the InnerCHANGE group in downtown LA (got to take the Metro and subway-great experience). After the session Jonathan took us for lunch to MaMa's Hot Tomales just down the street and across from the famous McArthur Park. The food was great and MaMa (Sandi Romero) is such a joy, she runs the restaruant as a training center and sells local art and crafts.

The session with the InnerCHANGE group was the first in a series we will do on language learning using Tom and Betty Sue Brewster's LAMP method. The group will learn Spanish in the community where they live and work with the planned result being "good news" to the people.

Thaxton women visit us

Rachel, Ashley and Colleen came for a quick visit on their way to music practice this afternoon. Ashley will be 16 on Jan. 19 and is taller than both her mom and I (I'm standing on my tip-toes). Seems like only yesterday when she was wearing the balloon hat I made for her.

Georgia works part time with Dr. Charles Van Engen and his newly formed doctoral program to train students in Latin America. The photo is a shot of the academic council for PRODOLA. You may check it out on the web at: www.prodola.org
The second photo is from last week end when we enjoyed dinner at Van Engens with Peter and Corine Larson who also work with PRODOLA. Chuch and Jean introduced us to a form of dominoes called Mexican Train. Great fun.

The week between Christmas and New Years was fun, our friend Rabbi Stuart Dauermann visited one afternoon (he lives a few blocks down Lake Ave).
Long time family friends from Tucson, AZ, Dale and Barbara Diamond, were in town visiting so they came for coffee on another afternoon.

Visit to Indiana and Michigan

We flew to Indianapolis and spent a few days with middle son Rob and his family, 18 mo. old Lauren was a real joy. Then we drove to Michigan to spend a few days with Georgia's family. Dan got to see Lake Michigan and a genuine snow storm, he said driving on snow is like learning to drive on gravel!
We attended Georgia's home church, Pierson Bible, on Sunday then went to Harry and Deb's for dinner and time with their kids.
At Sylvia and Chip's we learned to play the game 'sequence' with John, and to meet all the growing grandkids. Then we spent a night at a motel in Ann Arbor and Charlene and some of her grandkids came to swim in the pool and Dan got to play Santa with the boys! We at at Frank's restaurant where Char's husband Pete is owner and cook, great food near UofM.
We spent the last night with Rob and Susie again and learned the wonderful news that Susie has been assigned to Dallas in the new year so we are all pleased with that. We did open gifts with Lauren and she loved her Elmo. When she opened her DVD she immediately pointed to the apple and said "apple". She is growing and learning so quickly and it was hard to say goodbye to the little princess.

Dan's trip to Australia Nov 07

Yes, Dan did a short trip to Cairns, Australia to meet with the MAF board, and he got to spend the night with our long time friends, Paul and Dulcie Grant in Brisbane. I hope to go on the next trip, especially to see the wild laurakeets that Paul feeds everyday.
